What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy is a mental health & human services profession that requires a master's degree for entry level positions. Art therapy combines psychological theory, psychotherapy and active artmaking processes to address therapeutic goals & promote lasting change. Art therapy is not limited to one particular age group and it can be provided in a variety of settings, including but not limited to hospitals, schools, prisons, community centers, shelters, residential treatment spaces. & private practice. Art Therapists have specific credentials that you should always look for when seeking art therapy services. I am a Board-Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC).
The levels of credentials are listed here: ATR-P, ATR, ATR-BC
Some other things to know about Art Therapy...

No Artistic Skill Required
Many of the people I work with haven't picked up an art supply since childhood, and that's completely okay. Art therapy isn't about creating something beautiful or being "good" at art. It's about giving yourself another way to explore, express, and understand your experiences. There is no right or wrong way to create here at Flow State Art Therapy & Counseling, LLC.

Varying Materials Based on Goals
As our work together unfolds, I may introduce different art materials or prompts based on what best supports your therapeutic goals & process. Each material offers unique opportunities for exploration and expression, so every intervention is thoughtfully tailored to your individual needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

Process & Insight Based
If you're feeling hesitant because you don't consider yourself "artistic," you're not alone. The focus of art therapy is never on creating something beautiful or technically skilled. Instead, art becomes a tool for exploring thoughts, processing emotions, gaining insight, and expressing experiences that can be difficult to put into words. There is no judgment here- only curiosity, self-discovery, and the opportunity to better understand yourself.

Art Therapy for Anxiety
Living with anxiety can feel like your mind is always one step ahead. Perhaps you're constantly anticipating, planning, and preparing for what could go wrong. You may find yourself overthinking conversations, struggling to relax, reacting with more frequent irritability, feeling overwhelmed by your responsibilities, or holding yourself to impossibly high standards. Even when everything appears "fine" on the outside, anxiety can make it difficult to truly feel at peace.
Art therapy offers a gentle way to slow down and reconnect with yourself. While traditional talk therapy helps you understand your thoughts, the creative process can help you access emotions, reduce overwhelm, and explore experiences that are difficult to put into words. Through personalized art-based interventions, you'll have the opportunity to gain insight into anxious patterns, build emotional awareness, and develop healthier ways of responding to stress.
You don't have to silence every anxious thought to experience calm and confidence. Together, we'll work toward helping you feel more grounded, present, and connected to yourself.
